Why is it so hard to type accented and other special characters in Windows?

Before I developed and started using WizKey, I'd always been frustrated by how difficult it was to type accented and other special characters in Windows.

I'm a software developer and I'm often corresponding with users from all over the world via email. A large percentage of my users have accented characters in their names and surnames. I'd find myself copying and pasting their name into my reply because I didn't know how to type the accented character, and 9 times out of 10 I'd have to change the font after pasting it. Very annoying. Of course I could have just typed in the names without the accents but that seemed rude to me.

In my line of work I also regularly need to type in other special unicode characters like © (copyright symbol) or currency symbols like ¥ (Yen), £ (Pound) or € (Euro), not to mention Greek letters (β, π) and Mathematical symbols (∞, ∂). And what about when I was editing HTML documents and needed to look up the HTML code for one of these special characters?

It was just too much pain.

Searching for a solution

I didn't want to memorise Alt+Key codes or have to rely on 'cheat sheets' stuck to the side of my monitor. I wanted a software solution.

I did a lot of googling and tried many different applications that claimed to make typing special characters easy. I didn't like any of them. They either got in my way with their ugly on screen keyboards, required the use of the mouse to type, conflicted with keyboard shortcuts used by the applications I use every day, used too much memory, slowed my PC down, or simply didn't work!

I figured there had to be a better way, so I decided to develop my own solution. I wanted an application that had the following features:

  • It must make the typing special characters as easy and as natural as possible
  • It shouldn't rely on the mouse for input - hands must remain on the keyboard at all times
  • It must use as few keystrokes as possible to access the special characters
  • The keyboard shortcuts must be easy to remember
  • It must remain hidden until needed - no big clunky on screen keyboards or the like to get in the way.

WizKey is the Answer!

The final result of my development work is called WizKey. It lets me type in any special character and I don't have any trouble remembering the shortcut keys! I'm a fussy guy, so if it works for me I'm sure it'll work great for you too!
